When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer? A Guide for New Orleans & Northshore Parents
When to book a newborn photographer is one of the first questions expectant parents ask me. For the best availability, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester.
You do not need to know exactly when your baby will arrive. We use your due date to reserve space on my calendar. Then, once your little one arrives, we finalize the session date.
This gives you one less thing to arrange during those beautiful, busy first days at home.
Quick Answer: Book your newborn photographer during your second trimester. Reserve your photographer using your due date, then finalize the portrait session after your baby arrives.

Why should you book a newborn photographer before your baby arrives?
Newborn portraits require more flexibility than most photography sessions.
Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due dates. Your photographer needs enough room in the calendar to accommodate early and late arrivals.
I accept only a limited number of newborn sessions each month. Reserving during pregnancy gives your family priority on my calendar around your expected due date.
It also gives us time to plan your session before life gets a little busier.
We can discuss clothing, colors, family portraits, sibling photographs, and finished artwork ahead of time.
When your baby arrives, you can focus on your new family instead of searching for a photographer.
Is the second trimester too early to book newborn photos?
No. The second trimester is an ideal time to begin planning.
Many parents assume they need to wait until the third trimester. Some even wait until after their baby arrives.
You certainly can inquire later, but availability may become limited.
Booking early also gives you time to find a photographer whose style and approach feel right for your family.
Look beyond beautiful photographs. Ask about newborn experience, safety, session planning, family portraits, and finished artwork.
My goal is to create more than a gallery of newborn images. I design each session around your baby and the story you want to preserve.
How can I schedule newborn photos when I don’t know my baby’s birth date?
This is much easier than it sounds.
You reserve your newborn photography experience using your estimated due date. You do not need to predict your baby’s birthday.
Once your baby arrives, contact me with the happy news. We will then choose the actual portrait date based on your baby’s arrival and my newborn schedule.
This flexible approach allows us to plan ahead without expecting your baby to follow a calendar.

When should newborn photos actually take place?
Booking your photographer and taking your newborn portraits happen at two different times.
You should book during pregnancy, but we typically create the portraits during your baby’s first few weeks.
Young newborns tend to sleep deeply and naturally curl into the positions they held before birth. This stage works beautifully for the soft, peaceful newborn portraits you often see in my portfolio.
Your baby’s age also influences the type of images we can create.
Older newborns may spend more time awake. They can make stronger eye contact and show more personality. Every stage offers something beautiful.
For a detailed explanation, read my guide to the best age for newborn photos in New Orleans.
Good to know: There is a difference between the best time to book newborn photos and the best time to take them. Book during pregnancy. Plan the actual session for after your baby arrives.
What if my baby comes early or late?
That is completely normal.
A due date helps me plan my calendar. It does not lock your baby into a specific portrait date.
If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we adjust.
This flexibility is one reason I limit the number of newborns I accept each month. I want enough room to accommodate each baby’s individual arrival.
You don’t need to worry about losing your session because your baby ignored the calendar.
Babies tend to make their own plans. I plan for that.

What if my baby is already here?
Reach out as soon as you can.
Do not assume you have missed your opportunity for beautiful newborn portraits.
Availability will depend on my calendar, but I’ll always tell you what options I have.
An older newborn session may look slightly different from a session during the earliest days. Your baby may stay awake longer or prefer less-curled positions.
Those differences can create beautiful portraits, too.
The important thing is to contact me instead of deciding on your own that it is “too late.”
How far in advance do newborn photographers book?
Booking timelines vary by photographer.
My Covington newborn studio serves families from across the Northshore and greater New Orleans area. Because I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month, some months fill earlier than others.
For that reason, I recommend contacting me during your second trimester.
If you already know you want newborn portraits, there is little benefit to waiting.
Early planning gives you more time and fewer decisions after your baby arrives.

What should I look for when choosing a newborn photographer?
Beautiful images matter, but newborn photography requires more than a pretty portfolio.
Your photographer will handle and pose your brand-new baby. Experience, patience, and safe practices should play an important role in your decision.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing babies on their backs for sleep and using a firm, flat sleep surface. While a photography session is not a sleep environment, these recommendations reinforce how carefully newborns need to be handled and positioned. Read the AAP’s safe sleep recommendations.
Professional Photographers of America also emphasizes natural posing, proper support, clean props, comfortable studio temperatures, and never forcing a newborn into a pose. Read PPA’s newborn portrait safety recommendations.
I have photographed babies and families for more than 20 years. I approach every newborn session with patience and respect for your baby’s comfort.

What happens after I reserve my newborn session?
Once your session is reserved, we begin planning.
We’ll talk about the colors and style you love. We can also discuss where you hope to display your portraits at home.
You don’t need to arrive with a Pinterest board full of ideas.
My Covington studio includes wraps, blankets, props, backdrops, and clothing for babies and children. I help coordinate the details so everything works together.
Parents and siblings can also join the session.
I want your newborn portraits to tell the story of your family, not only document how tiny your baby was.
